Every sold-out product on your store is a small leak. A shopper arrives ready to buy, finds the item unavailable, and leaves. Most never come back, and you never even know they were there. Back-in-stock alerts close that leak: instead of losing the visitor, you capture their interest and bring them back automatically when the product returns.
On a sold-out product page, shoppers see a short signup: something like "Email me when it's back." They enter their email and join a waitlist for that specific product or variant. When you add inventory again, every shopper waiting for that item gets an automatic email letting them know it's available, with a link straight back to the product.
The result is a recovered sale you would otherwise have lost, and a list of people who have told you exactly what they want to buy.
Shopify doesn't include back-in-stock alerts natively, so you add them with an app from the Shopify App Store. The setup is short:
Back-in-stock apps vary a lot. A few things worth checking before you commit:
A waitlist is also a demand signal. If 80 people are waiting for one variant and 3 for another, you know exactly what to reorder and how much. Reviewing which products attract the most signups can guide your purchasing as well as recover individual sales.
